Mariam Mandacan, also known as Mama Mariam, is a farmer from Mony Village, Warmare District, Manokwari, West Papua. She had experience in cultivating several commodities, such as beans, tomatoes, and chilis. Under the assistance of Yayasan Bina Tani Sejahtera (YBTS), Mama Mariam continued to improve her farmlands by taking up a new challenge to cultivate shallots using the True Shallot Seeds (TSS) method.
Mama Mariam started her shallot cultivation by planting 150 grams of TSS seeds from Sanren F1 and Cap Panah Merah variety. She utilized a 300-meter square farmland to grow the shallots. As a result, she harvested 50 kilograms of shallots with superior quality. Her success was not without the YBTS technical field officers (TFO), who tirelessly assisted her throughout farming. The assistance given by the YBTS team helped with the initial seeding process to the post-harvest activities. Not only did she obtain new skills and knowledge, Mama Mariam also got to befriend other farmers during her time with the YBTS team.
“I am very thankful for the training given by TBTS. Not only did I get valuable knowledge about the know-how in growing my crops, but I also got the chance to build a network with farmers from the neighboring villages,” said Mama Mariam.
Despite obtaining outstanding results, Mama Mariam did not want to feel overly satisfied yet. She tried to use her previous success in cultivating TSS to improve her farmings further. In the future, Mama Mariam planned to expand her farmlands to produce more shallots by using the TSS method. She hoped that her success story could also motivate fellow farmers to continue developing themselves and elevating the farming industries in Manokwari.
