The field of agriculture is indeed promising for those who are diligent, enterprising, and willing to try. This has been proven by a young man from Wafor Village, North Biak District, Biak Numfor Regency, Zakarias Kafiar, who has been dedicated to farming for 4 years. Zakarias initially did not have a stable profession. Sometimes he works as a forage collector or construction laborer. Of course, the income he obtained was insufficient to meet the needs of the family.
It all began in 2019, when the Bina Tani Sejahtera Foundation provided support to the local youth farming group, Zakarias decided to join. Through the demonstration garden that he established, he began to learn techniques for applying good agricultural practices (GAP). The 35-year-old youth proved that his struggle was not in vain. In 2021, he planted cabbage and tomatoes, resulting in a highly successful harvest. On a land area of around 700 m² of plants he grows, he was able to earn an income of up to Rp 50,000,000. He used this income to support his family and his children’s education.
“If people from outside Papua can do it, then we, indigenous Papuan youth with fertile soil, should be able to as well. The future of Papua is in our hands, the youth. As long as we are willing to work hard, everything is possible. Papua youth spirit,” he concluded.
